3 Destinations to Retreat and Recharge this Winter

With the holiday rush now behind us, the start of the new year often inspires many to enthusiastically return to the gym, embark on ambitious New Year's resolutions, or alternatively, succumb to the winter blues.

Personally, I've found winter to be the perfect time for planning a retreat to contemplate my goals and aspirations for the year. In these retreat moments, there's something deeply comforting about sitting by a warm fire, wrapped in a cozy blanket, with a journal in hand or a good book on my lap. Popular destinations, usually crowded during the summer or spring, become quieter and more peaceful in winter, offering a chance to explore in a more serene and reflective environment.

These are some of my favorite winter getaways:

Zion Mountain Ranch - Mt. Carmel, Utah

Located just outside the entrance to the breathtaking Zion National Park, this authentic western destination provides a unique and immersive experience that truly captures the essence of the American West. The property features a collection of cozy cabins, each thoughtfully designed to offer comfort and warmth, many of which boast charming porches that provide the perfect vantage point to admire the free-roaming buffalo herd that inhabits the property.

The on-site restaurant, Cordwood utilizes extensive organic gardens and innovative aquaponic greenhouses to ensure that every meal is not only delicious but also healthy. Guests can indulge in a farm-to-table dining experience, where the ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and harvested just before they are served.

With limited connectivity options available, visitors can fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings, making it an ideal place for a complete digital detox. For those seeking adventure, the ranch is conveniently located near numerous hiking trails that wind through the stunning landscapes of Zion National Park. Horseback riding excursions are available, allowing guests to traverse the majestic mountains of Zion in a way that evokes the spirit of the Old West.

Whether you are seeking relaxation or adventure, Zion Mountain Ranch promises an unforgettable experience that celebrates the beauty of nature and the charm of rustic living.

Stephanie Inn - Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach is a ruggedly beautiful destination that has left me in a delightful quandary regarding my preference for visits on sunny days versus stormy ones. On one hand, the experience of biking down the expansive stretch of hard-packed sand is invigorating and refreshing when the sun is shining brightly overhead.

On the other hand, there is something equally enchanting about experiencing Cannon Beach during a stormy winter day. The dramatic contrast of dark, rolling clouds and the powerful sound of crashing waves creates an atmosphere that is both thrilling and soothing. Nestling in front of a cozy fire in my favorite room at the Stephanie Inn, I find immense pleasure in sipping a glass of wine as I listen to the rumble of crashing waves. The ambiance is undeniably cozy, inviting introspection and relaxation. The ever-changing weather patterns add a unique charm to the beach, transforming it into a serene sanctuary where one can appreciate the raw power of nature while enjoying the comforts of warmth and tranquility indoors.

In addition to the natural beauty, Cannon Beach boasts a delightful array of shops and galleries that cater to diverse tastes and interests. Wandering through these establishments can easily occupy an entire day.

Hotel Lungarno - Florence, Italy

Sitting on the banks of the Arno river in view of the magnificent Duomo and just steps from the Ponte Vecchio, Hotel Lungarno is an ideal destination and winter is an ideal time for a visit. With rates for this 5 star hotel nearly 20% lower than normal, you can enjoy and extended stay and explore Florence in a more serene setting than almost any other time of the year.

Florence is particularly well-suited for solo travelers, as the ambiance of the city ensures that you are never truly alone in your adventures. Whether you find yourself indulging in a delightful shopping spree along the historic Ponte Vecchio, where artisan shops showcase exquisite jewelry and handcrafted goods, or immersing yourself in the rich history of the Uffizi Gallery, home to some of the most renowned masterpieces in the world, there is always something captivating to engage your senses.

As you wander through the winding streets in winter relish the quietude that envelops you while strolling past picturesque piazzas and charming cafes. Quiet nights spent journaling in your room will become a cherished ritual as you look out over the River Arno to a view of the Duomo.

Florence is a city that invites you to explore both its external beauty and your inner thoughts, making it an ideal destination for solo winter travel.
