1. International Snow Sculpting Championships, Breckenridge, Colorado - January 20-29.
Why this is a must attend event: Artists from around the world bring only hand tools to carve 25 ton blocks of snow into intricate works for art. The temporary outdoor art gallery is mesmerizing under the backdrop of the majestic Colorado mountains.
2. Winter Carnival, Steamboat Springs, Colorado - February 5 -9
Why this is a must attend event: Named as one of the top 10 winter carnivals in the world, the Steamboat Springs winter carnival is packed with sites unseen! From Skijoring, a thrilling spectacle in which horses tow skiers through an obstacle course of turns and jumps at speeds of up to 50mph, to a parade featuring the Steamboat Springs high school band marching down the street on snowski's. Traditions and history run deep in this magical winter wonderland.
3. Iditarod, Anchorage, Alaska - March 1
Why this is a must attend event: Heralded as "The Last Great Race," mushers and their teams of eager canines line the streets of Anchorage in an event that will both inspire and take you back in time. Before racers embark on the treacherous thousand mile journey across the frozen Alaskan wilderness, supporters and revelers from around the world gather on the streets of Anchorage to bid them farewell on their journey. A vintage snowmobile parade, a "Pamplona-style" running of the reindeer and the "miners and trappers" ball are just a few of the must see events taking place around the Iditarod. Plan an extra day or two and get some skiing or snowmobiling in at Alyeska Ski Resort less than an hour away from downtown Anchorage.
